Adaminaby is located on the Snowy Mountains Highway, 55km from Cooma and an hour and a half’s drive from Canberra. Cooma Airfield has a daily service from Sydney and an available car-hire service.
From Canberra, the alternative route is through Tharwa, down the Bolero Road through the Namidgi National Park. Take the right fork at Shannon’s Flat or you will be on the road down to Cooma. The road is unsurfaced from the start of the park to the Murumbidgee River and rough at the north end. Care must be taken to drive to the conditions, but the road is a lot shorter and is an exciting drive. It is about 80km to Canberra this way and there is no fuel before Tharwa.
Visitors from Melbourne can access the Snowy Mountains Highway from the Hume Highway after Tarcutta, through Adalong and Tumut. The Snowy Mountains Highway is of course an alternative route to the Hume Highway and on to Canberra. It is a very scenic drive and many people drive the loop for the variety, but it is a longer drive than through Cooma
As public transport is not available except for the Cooma School bus, it is recommended visitors have their own transport. Also it is essential if you want to explore the region.
